After finding little success in Hollywood, his only notable work being an uncredited role in Awakenings (1990), Diesel returned to New York in 1995. His mother gave him a copy of Rick Schmidt’s book Feature Filmmaking at Used-Car Price (1988), which inspired him to make a semi-autobiographical short, Multi-Facial (1995), about a biracial actor struggling to get roles. He worked as a telemarketer to raise money for his first feature film, Strays (1997). Diesel got his big break when director Steven Spielberg, who had seen Multi-Facial, cast him in the award-winning Saving Private Ryan (1998). With his handsome screen presence—shaven head, muscular physique, gruff voice, and acerbic charm—Diesel was soon in regular work. He played escaped criminal Richard Riddick in the science fiction film Pitch Black (2000) and reprized the character in two other films, The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Riddick (2013).

The Fast and the Furious (2001) established Diesel in his most famous role, as the charismatic street racer and thief Dominic Toretto. The over-the-top action film cost $38 million, but was a sleeper hit, grossing nearly $145 million in the United States. Diesel followed up with another action film, xXx (2002), playing an extreme athlete turned secret agent Xander Cage, and the drama A Man Apart (2003). He turned to a more humorous approach with The Pacifier (2005) and Sidney Lumet’s mob comedy Find Me Guilty (2006).

Diesel did not appear in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and only had a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). However, he returned to the franchise, both as star and producer, for Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and Furious 7 (2015). The latter was particularly successful, grossing over $1.5 billion and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The franchise continued to do well with The Fate of the Furious (2017) and F9: The Fast Saga (2021). Diesel has also tried his hand at other genres, such as the fantasy thriller The Last Witch Hunter (2015). He then rejoined the xXx series in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) after moving on to the 2005 sequel. He took a break from franchise films with the sci-fi film Bloodshot (2020). Guardians of the Galaxy

Behind the scenes, Diesel used his signature voice as the lead character in the animated film The Iron Giant (1999). He later voiced the tree-like superhero Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), its sequel (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

In 2019, Diesel starred in the ninth installment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “F9”. The film was a huge success, grossing over $1 billion at the box office.

Since 2019, Diesel has continued to work on the “Fast and Furious” franchise. He is set to star in the tenth and eleventh installments of the franchise, which are scheduled to be released in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Diesel has also starred in other films since 2019. He starred in the 2020 film “Bloodshot”, and he is set to star in the 2023 film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”.

In addition to his film career, Diesel is also a successful producer. He has his own production company, One Race Films. He has produced several films, including the “Fast and Furious” franchise and “Bloodshot”.

Diesel is also a successful entrepreneur. He has invested in several businesses, including a clothing line and a vodka brand.

In his personal life, Diesel is in a relationship with Mexican model Paloma Jimenez. They have three children together.
